The ring chain pattern on this gold ring is typical of the Borre style that was prevalent in the 9^th and 10^th centuries. While knotwork originated with the Celts, this style developed in Scandinavia and then spread to both the British Isles and the Baltics as the Vikings fanned out across northern Europe.
