Dragons are an important element of Norse mythology. Viking longships often had dragon heads carved on their prows to symbolize strength and courage. Dragons such as Jörmungandr (the Midgard Serpent) and Níðhöggr were considered malevolent while others, including Fáfnir, were believed to hoard gold.
